Economic Development Commission to Honor Sheffield Pharmaceuticals: Wednesday, January 8, at 4:30 p.m. in Council Anteroom, City Hall (Press Invited)
At its meeting on Wednesday, January 8th at 4:30 p.m., the New London Economic Development Commission (EDC) will award a Certificate of Appreciation to Sheffield Pharmaceuticals in recognition of its significant–and historical–role in fostering the economic development of New London.
Sheffield Pharmaceuticals is located on 170 Broad Street in New London, where it has been located for 160 years (at a site now designated as a Connecticut Historic Landmark location). The company manufactures pharmaceutical creams, ointments, and toothpastes.
Sheffield’s range of services include product development and package design, as well as the manufacture of the final product. The product line includes formulations for Bacitracin, Capsaicin, Iodine, Benzoyl Peroxide and Zinc Oxide, all manufactured in accordance with Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs) under Federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA) guidelines.
In addition to being honored at the EDC meeting, Sheffield Pharmaceuticals will:

  • Receive a joint proclamation from Mayor Daryl Finizio along with Council President Wade Hyslop and members of New London City Council during the City Council meeting on Tuesday, January 21;
  • Be featured in The Day Publishing Company’s New London Times publication; and
  • Be interviewed on the “New London Matters” radio show, with Economic Development Chair Frank McLaughlin and developer Anthony Silvestri.

“Sheffield has been an integral part of New London’s business community for more than 50 years,” says EDC Chair Frank McLaughlin. “Today, under the leadership of President Thomas H. Faria, the business is stronger and better than ever.”
Why Sheffield Is Being Honored
“Sheffield is the kind of enterprise that represents the true spirit of “economic gardening,” a business philosophy espoused by Atty. Glenn Carberry,” says McLaughlin. “The principle behind economic gardening is that communities need to look within their own perimeters to recognize and reward existing companies that are entrepreneurial, creative, growing, and sustainable–and that employ local residents.”
Sheffield Pharmaceuticals employs 120 people, with numerous contractors on site as well. The management team focuses on sustainability, best practices, excellent customer service, and continuous improvement that has resulted in notable growth and profitability.
